  • Credit Bureau’s are not government agencies; they are publicly traded “for profit” companies.
  • Credit Bureau’s profit by selling their version of your credit report to you and other third party companies wanting to know your credit history.
  • Credit Bureau’s will attempt to sell you their version of your credit report at all points of contact, but be aware that you are entitled to one free credit report, from each credit bureau each year.

  • To dispute an item on your credit report, you will need to have a recent copy of your credit report before contacting any credit bureau. Order Online Credit Report
  • To receive your credit report, you can either purchase one from the credit bureau directly (report will include your credit score), or you can order your free annual credit report here (will not include your credit score): Free Annual Credit Report
  • You will also get your credit report when you financially protect yourself with a Credit Monitoring program: Sign Up for Credit Monitoring
  • If you follow the prompts accurately, you will probably succeed in talking with a real person voice-to-voice through the Equifax and TransUnion automated phone system. But, unless you have a recent Experian credit report, you will not be able to speak to a real person by navigating Experian’s automated phone system (the credit report will have a phone number and file report # to get to a real person).
